One day many years ago I discovered the phrase face to face with the sky scrawled in purple paint on a pier overlooking the ocean. It’s a phrase from the poem “Time and Again,” by Rilke. I found it moving. Year after year of writing, albeit somewhat aimlessly, I’ve found this phrase captures the feeling I get when I write. It’s a feeling that is hard to define, but I know fellow writers will understand.
